- <p> Right about now LARRY GONICK is somewhere in India during
- the 2nd century B.C. "That's the beginning of consciousness
- tripping as we know it," he says. Actually he's in San
- Francisco, toiling over his multivolume Cartoon History of the
- Universe--the first book was published last month--and
- should be up to the present by 1996 or so. A math grad from
- Harvard, Gonick, 44, is a cartoonist who takes history
- seriously, dividing his time between the library stacks and the
- drawing board. If there's one place he wishes he had lived in
- it's ancient Athens, whose democracy-loving citizens made it
- "the Boston of Greece."
