  18. <p>     Right about now LARRY GONICK is somewhere in India during
  19. the 2nd century B.C. "That's the beginning of consciousness
  20. tripping as we know it," he says. Actually he's in San
  21. Francisco, toiling over his multivolume Cartoon History of the
  22. Universe--the first book was published last month--and
  23. should be up to the present by 1996 or so. A math grad from
  24. Harvard, Gonick, 44, is a cartoonist who takes history
  25. seriously, dividing his time between the library stacks and the
  26. drawing board. If there's one place he wishes he had lived in
  27. it's ancient Athens, whose democracy-loving citizens made it
  28. "the Boston of Greece."
